LPG x BioDiesel

LPG was the obvious choice for taxi drivers until some years ago, except for Coupon Taxis and Mega Taxis usually powered by Diesel engines usual to found in nearly any AUV or passenger van. However, it's a gaseous fuel, then harder to handle than a liquid fuel. Also, it's a petroleum-based fuel, not renewable. There is another gaseous fuel highly used worldwide, the methane-based Natural Gas, that can be sourced from landfills and sewage treatment stations. Usually, higher pressure systems are more used with it, so while an LPG system is usually in the 15-bar range a CNG is around 200 to 250-bar. Some low pressure Natural Gas had been used in buses to run on biomethane from pork farms sewage in China, but this is not suitable to smaller vehicles like a Toyota Vios.

For commercial operators, Diesel engines had been proven as unbeatable, due to its improved fuel efficiency and usually more reinforced hardware. The absence of an electric ignition system is also good to heavy duties, such as mining sites, marine applications, industrial power generation and military vehicles. Also, there is the safety factor: Diesel fuel is less volatile, reducing the risk of explosions in comparison with gasoline, alcohol and LPG. Biodiesel has two more advantages: it's renewable and not require foreign materials to be made of. Then, finantial resources remain in the homeland, allowing the generation of jobs for local people.

An uncle of mine has a Pontiac Trans Sport currently running on CNG, since LPG is forbidden for automotive applications in Brazil (allowed only for forklifts and other off-road vehicles) but he wanted to convert it to diesel since he bought that minivan. CNG bottles take a lot of space.

Gaseous fuels are still too hard to manage and not so easy to deliver to customers in more remote areas.
