The original SM465 is enough strong to hold the torque of a diesel engine but with a more modern overdrive 5-speed transmission you would get an even bigger improvement on fuel efficiency. A wide range of engines can fit into the truck. About 1-litre to 1.2-litre per cylinder is a good parameter to help you to choose the most suitable options. A surplus Isuzu 4BD1T can be a good match to the SM465, as its size and power ratio is close to the Cummins 4BT widely used for repowering in trucks like yours in other countries, or the non-turbocharged 4HF1/4HFG1 that are also reasonable. Other option could be the Toyota 14B used in the Toyota Dyna.

I have seen a lot of the old-style C10 (Brazilian version) with the SM420 behind the Perkins 4-236, and there are some still running all around Brazil. BTW when GMT400 was made in Argentina there were some 4cyl diesel versions using the 4.1L Iochpe-Maxion S4/T, but the transmission was 5spd.

Some of the Brazilian GM trucks have been offered in the Philippines, badged either as Chevy 4 for the earlier C10 or B10 to the latest pre-GMT400 ones.

I saw a GMT400 with a 14B in Amazon some years ago. It was a 3500 dooley and had the engine and manual transmission out of a Daihatsu Delta.

There are also some good engine choices from Mercedes-Benz. A great one would be the OM-904 LA.
